Take the path less travelled up to the Mount Vic Lookout. Start your walk in Newtown, where you’ll find some of Wellington’s best coffee and some extremely cute animals to visit.
Visiting the Mount Vic Lookout is far from an original trip idea. This has to be one of the city’s top visited tourist spots, and yet its popularity has never cheapened the appeal for me. The panoramic views over the city are hard to beat, especially on a clear blue day.
Starting in Newtown is one of the best ways to walk Mount Vic, especially if you have some time up your sleeve.
Head to Peoples Coffee at the bottom of Constable Street and sip an organic brew outside with the cool-kids of Newtown. From here, you basically just keep walking up the street, eventually veering onto Alexandra Road.
Take a breather and play with the pups at the SPCA, then continue walking directly up the hill to reach the Lookout.
Plan to have a good 2-3 hours up your sleeve for the walk.

Peoples Coffee supply many Wellington cafes with their locally roasted, Fair Trade organic coffee.
Newtown is home to the brand’s own popular cafe on Constable Street. Something I really like about this place is the eclectic mix of patrons—from hipsters talking art, to families en route to the vege market, everyone feels welcome at Peoples.
And the coffee? Unbeatable.
Opening hours: 7.30am–5pm everyday.
140 Alexandra Rd, Newtown
Wellington’s SPCA has been helping the region’s animals in need for over 130 years. They are the second largest SPCA in the country.
Sheltering and rehoming animals is a large part of the charity’s work. For this reason, many animals live here who the public can visit and apply to adopt.
Opening hours: 10am–4pm everyday.
Mount Victoria Lookout
49 Lookout Rd, Hataitai
The Mount Vic Lookout is the definition of a Wellington must-do. If you’re new to the city, the viewing platform is a great way to orientate yourself while admiring the beauty of the city and its surrounding waters.
Located within the central city, this spot is nice and easy to get to. Walk through the Town Belt to get there, or take a vehicle to the very top by following Lookout Road.
Take a bus, get dropped-off or leave a car in Newtown (you could walk back down the hill into Newtown if you’re feeling energetic).
Your first destination is at the bottom of Constable St. Afterwards, walk directly up the street, almost to the top, then merge left onto Alexandra Rd. There’s a blue arrow-shaped sign here that says “SPCA”. Follow the road past the Tennis Club up to the SPCA.
From the SPCA, follow the pink signs into the bush that say “Lookout Walkway”. Continue to follow these signs. Be sure to watch out for oncoming cyclists as you walk.
